Raw Material Unveils Renovated Space In Brixton, Hailing More Creative Possibilities For South London And Beyond!

“Raw’s Capital Development Project brings timely and substantial benefits to our participant-members, staff and wider community.” Katy (Finance & Resources Manager).

For well over a decade, Raw Material has been a vital centre of music, creativity and wellbeing for the communities in and around Lambeth. Raw’s work centres on the understanding that creative and social activities have a major role to play in promoting mental health; and over the years their programme has included many such activities, and been as wide-ranging as singing, songwriting, DJing, live jamming, photography, dance, theatre and even set design!

Our Capital Development Project has been in the works for about 4 years, with over one million in funds raised thanks to principal donors: the Greater London Authority, Lambeth Council, Arts Council England and the Q Trust. Construction began in the latter half of 2022, with the renovation nearing completion at the turn of this year. The project marks a significant step forward in sustainability, accessibility, and creative innovation, ensuring that the iconic building continues to serve as a valuable resource for artists, musicians, and the local community.

Among the highlights of the Capital Development Project are the structural changes allowing for greater accessibility, spatial capacity and multi-functionality. The most significant transformation has taken place on the 3rd floor, which will now operate as a multi-use space for new entrepreneurial and community-driven activities and well has enabling the expansion of Raw Material’s own programming capacity.

“Raw Material has been instrumental in making me happy, healthy and creative, and I can’t wait to return to see what’s new!” Raw Material Participant.

To celebrate the reopening, Raw Material will be hosting a special event featuring live performances, interactive workshops, and guided tours of the upgraded facility. This Community Open Day will be taking place on the 8th April. The public is warmly invited to explore the new space, experience Raw for themselves and discover what creative opportunities they can access. Register your attendance now!
