This is your route into the industry.
Over 3 months, you'll build real technical skills, hear directly from professionals, and get paid, hands-on work experience — all designed to set you up for further training or your first role in sound engineering or backstage production.
Three Core Elements
Build a solid grounding in the fundamentals of sound engineering, including signal flow, microphone technique, recording, EQ, and the other core tools of the trade — taught hands-on across both our studio and live spaces.
Foundational Training
Learn directly from people working backstage in sound engineering at recording studios and live venues across London, gaining an honest, first-hand picture of what a career in the industry really looks like.

Work Experience
What To Expect
14 weeks of hands-on training across professional studio and live room facilities.
Practical experience recording real musicians, from solo artists to full bands.
Grounding in signal flow, microphone technique, gain staging, EQ, compression, effects and mixing.
Paid work experience to build your CV and industry contacts.
Weekly recaps, handouts, and one-to-one support to reinforce your learning.
A supportive peer group and community to learn alongside.
A final project and presentation to showcase what you've learned.
Skills and confidence to pursue further training or apply for roles in studio and live sound production.
Eligibility Criteria
Who is it for?
18–25 year olds.
Anyone with an existing interest in music, music production, or sound.
People considering a career in sound engineering, live production, or backstage roles in the music industry
People who would not usually have access to opportunities like these, who face significant barriers (systemic or social/financial) to progressing their creative careers.
Those facing socio-economic barriers to creative progression or systemic inequality (e.g. racism, classism, sexism and other forms of discrimination), or individuals disengaged from the formal education curriculum.
Can You Commit?
This programme asks for real commitment, and we want participants who can see it through:
When: Mondays, 11am – 5pm
Starts: Monday 21st September
Duration: 12 weeks (with a break for October Half Term)
Where: Raw Material's Studio and Live Room facilities
You'll need to be able to attend consistently across the full 3 months — the programme builds week on week, and each session lays the groundwork for the next.
Specific Experience / Skills
This programme is aimed at 18–25 year olds who already have an interest in music or music production and a basic understanding of the area — you don't need to be a professional, but some prior interest or exposure will help you get the most out of it.
What matters most is enthusiasm, curiosity, and a genuine desire to build a career in the industry.
