Learning from legends: jungle DJ ‘double o’ returns to raw material
This summer, young people in our community will have the opportunity to learn DJing from a drum n’ bass legend at the top of his game.
“It’s about giving back. The more you give the more you receive. It’s always good to pass skills on to the next generation, not to say they have to do it this or that way, but for them to take whatever they do from you, and then do it in their own style and you just nurture what they’re doing. It’s great to do that, it's fulfilling… it's what should be done.”
In a career spanning decades, with major accomplishments including the foundation of his own record label, Rupture, the establishment of a regular event series at FOLD and Corsica Studios, and, upcoming at the end of June, the release of a full length debut album, David Henry has been a pillar of underground music culture in general, and of the drum ‘n’ bass genre in particular.
But it doesn’t stop with music. In an interview with Raw Material last week, David talked about how he’s always believed in the importance of giving back to the community. Speaking of his beginnings in music, he cited Sheffield dance pioneer Winston Hazel as well as his older brother as being early mentors to him. Throughout his life, David has sought to return the favour to other young people and those facing barriers of access and resources, identifying as a DJ, producer, and youth worker all at the same time.
Since being introduced to Raw Material over 16 years ago, Double O has facilitated a whole host of production courses, from studio workshops to software tutorials, recording sessions to DJing classes. It’s clear that what he’s found in Raw is the opportunity to share his knowledge and his passion for music with those members of the community who stand to benefit the most.
“Bring whatever music, you like. There’s no restrctions. Come and have fun, relax and enjoy yourself.”
So what can participants expect from the course? Over a period of 4 days, from 1-5pm each day, David is going to take everyone through the basics of DJing: beat matching, cueing, syncing, EQs and everything else. As he point outs, most important of all is that everyone has a good time and as well as the opportunity to have a go at DJing music that’s personal to them. Come the end of the programme, participants will record a live mix with everyone contributing their own tracks and newfound DJ skills.
Sync Lab takes place at the Raw Material building on Monday 24th - Thursday 27th July, from 1-5pm. It’s now possible to sign up for this programme by following the link below.
