Uprising
This project is now finished.
Artists Stephen Rudder of Quiet Voice and Rap Artist BREIS (breeze) are looking for eight elder black men who have experienced South London in the 70’s and 80’s and eight young black men who experience it now, to take part in a black men’s intergenerational project creating work inspired by the theme of ‘Uprising’. The work created will be showcased at a special event during Black History Month.
The 8 elders and 8 younger black men will be working with BREIS to use spoken word and visual collage to express ‘Uprising’.
How do black men interpret Uprising?
An elder black man who has experienced the 1981 Brixton Uprisings may see it differently from a young black man in an era of social media trying to define himself - or perhaps not.
This intergenerational project is a collaboration with young black men, elder black men and black male artists to explore black male perspectives on Uprising. In this context the participants will collaborate with the artists to create a spoken word/visual art event, featuring themselves and their perspectives. The event will be held at 198 Gallery, Brixton.
The project will take place over five weeks from the last week of September and throughout October 2022 (Black History Month).
The first part of the project will be a series of evening workshops hosted at Raw Material, Brixton. Here a small intergenerational group of black men will come together, one evening a week, for four weeks to explore the themes of Uprising. They will use these discussions to inspire spoken word and visual collage. These workshops will be led by Stephen Rudder of Quiet Voice in collaboration with a spoken word artist BREIS. Food will be provided.
These workshops will give the participants an opportunity to focus and finesse the creative pieces and work with the artists to bring their work together into a one-off spoken-word visual-art event.
