In-Reach

‘In-Reach’ is Raw Material’s hospital outreach programme, providing creative music workshops in mental health wards across South London. These sessions take place predominately across wards on Lambeth, Maudsley and Bethlem hospitals, and focus on providing those experiencing ill mental health with a creative distraction and a positive outlet for expression.

Facilitators adapt their practice to meet the needs of the patients in the moment, allowing for the necessary flexibility to successful engage with patients on any gie day. Sessions might include songwriting exercises, DJing and creating music playlist compilations. Facilitators also curate sessions around special events in the wards, including Black History month and Christmas. The sessions provide patients something to look forward to, encourage compliance with boundaries hospital staff set, and motivate participants to gain therapeutic leave from hospital. Once inpatients are assigned leave, they are encouraged to attend Raw Sounds creative programmes at our Brixton hub.

In addition to providing patients with creative skills in communication, resilience and socialisation, our staff monitor participants' well-being and feedback to help track the impact of their creative experiences, and how this can contribute to early intervention, thereby preventing relapse and readmission.

Key outcomes of the In-Reach programme include:

  • Participants are able to engage with a therapeutic activity whilst in hospital, which supports their transition into living in the community.

  • Increased access for people from global majority communities and young people to appropriate mental health services.

  • Fewer people with mental health needs relapse, and need readmission to hospital as a result of access to positive activities.
